free throw
The attempt to score a basket, unobstructed, uncontested from the free throw line (15 feet from the basket). A free throw is worth one point. A team is awarded a free throw when the opposing team commits a foul. The player on whom the foul was committed has to take the free throw(s). In case of free throw(s) resulting from a technical foul, any player can take the free throw. This is generally the point guard of the team, at the time on the floor. A player who is fouled while in the act of shooting a two-pointer gets two free throws, and in the act of shooting a three-pointer, three free throws. Also: foul shot.
